Sold Until: December 31, 2013
Program Access Available: January 1, 2013-July 15, 2014

The Principles of Clinical Toxicology Certificate Program is a basic to intermediate-level program for scientists who work in laboratories that perform toxicology testing as well as other health care professionals with an interest in learning more about toxicology. The program is composed of four courses, listed below, which can be completed online in approximately 2 hours each. Each course contains a lecture, slides and transcripts, a quiz and some include additional readings. There are opportunities for interaction with faculty and other participants using the certificate program discussion board.

  • Introduction to Clinical Toxicology
  • Immunoassays to Screen for Drugs of Abuse
  • Specimens for Toxicology Testing
  • Chromatography Basics for Toxicology Testing

You can earn 8 ACCENT® continuing education credits for completing the entire program. To receive the certificate, you must successfully complete all four courses by the program end date.

Certificates are awarded online upon successful completion of the program. Graduates are recognized at the AACC Annual Meeting and are listed on a register located on the certificate program web page.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Each year, approximately 4 million patients experience some kind of overdose, and 25% of those patients enter the health care setting to be evaluated for toxicity. The results from toxicology testing shape diagnosis and treatment decisions. Because laboratorians identify the exposure, physicians can determine the appropriate action and therapy.
This program is designed to provide a basic background in clinical toxicology and cover most screening procedures.

After completion of the program, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the fundamentals of toxicology beginning with what constitutes a toxic substance and how it is handled by the human body.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various specimen types and the use of testing to validate the acceptability of the specimen.
  • Discuss the how the laboratory can support patient care in toxicology cases.
  • Explain the principles of immunoassay testing.
  • Explain the principles of screening with chromatography testing and the various methods that can be used in toxicology testing.

The expert faculty have provided best practices within toxicology as well as research from recent studies to illustrate those practices. The following individuals developed and contributed content to the Principles of Clinical Toxicology Certificate Program:

  • Donald Frederick, PhD, Faculty Chair
    PTPG, Peoria, IL
  • Robert L. Fitzgerald, PhD
University of California-San Diego, San Diego, CA
  • Stacy E.F. Melanson, MD, PhD
Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA
  • James Ritchie, PhD, DABCC, FACB
    Emory University, Atlanta, GA
  • Andrea Terrell, PhD, DABCC
    AIT Laboratories, Indianapolis, IN
